Browns waive RB Tate

Ten games into a two-year, $6.2 million contract, running back Ben Tate was waived Tuesday by the Cleveland Browns.

Tate, a backup to Arian Foster before reaching free agency in March 2014, signed with the Browns and opened the season as Cleveland’s starter. But he left the Week 1 game after four carries with a knee injury and never found his footing as rookies Terrance West and Isaiah Crowell carved out their own niche in a committee backfield that Tate said last week he didn’t like.

“With all the transactions we make while constructing our roster, it will always be our intent to do what is best for our football team,” Browns general manager Ray Farmer said. “This move is no different and we wish Ben the best going forward.”

Tate played in eight games and had two carries for minus-9 yards last week against Houston.

Tate, who made $2.5 million in signing bonus and guarantees before Tuesday’s transaction, is subject to waivers and eligible to be claimed by any team. The priority order is set by overall record, with the Oakland Raiders (0-10) first and the Arizona Cardinals (9-1) 32nd.
