The Buffalo Bills terminated their agreement Wednesday to play one game per season in Toronto.

Bills president Russ Brandon announced in a statement to end the Toronto series.

“We greatly appreciate the support we’ve received over the past seven years from all of the tremendous people at Rogers Communications,” Brandon said. “We will continue to work hard to solidify our footprint in Southern Ontario. Our fan base in this region remains extremely important to our organization and their support has been well documented.”

The series began in 2008 when the Bills became the first NFL team to host a regular-season game in Canada. Over the next six years through 2013, the Bills played six regular-season games and two preseason games at Rogers Centre.

The Bills announced in March that they would not play a game in Canada this season.

“When we put the series on pause last year, the ultimate goal was to get to this point and it’s taken some time to come to a final conclusion,” Brandon said during his weekly appearance Wednesday on WGR 550.

The series had faced declining attendance and there were concerns from Buffalo fans about losing a game at Ralph Wilson Stadium each season.

“In hindsight, I know there’s a lot of noise about moving games up north, and I understand that completely,” Brandon said. “But when we look at what it has done for us regionally and what it has done for us back at Ralph Wilson Stadium, obviously southern Ontario has become a very large market for us as far as fans coming to our games at Ralph Wilson Stadium. That has been a positive.”

Terry Pegula and wife Kim were unanimously approved by NFL owners in October as the new owners of the Bills. The Pegulas, who also own the NHL’s Buffalo Sabres, acquired the franchise from the family of late owner Ralph Wilson, who died in March, for $1.4 billion.
