The Buffalo Bills continue to set up interviews with potential candidates for their head-coaching opening, and the team’s new owners are actively involved.

The Bills are seeking to replace former head coach Doug Marrone, who abruptly opted out of his contract on Wednesday.

The Bills have been in contact with Mike Shanahan, the former head coach of the Denver Broncos and Washington Redskins, and hope to set up an interview with him, Adam Schefter of ESPN reported Saturday. The interview could occur as early as this weekend, according to Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com.

According to ESPN, the Bills also requested permission to interview Indianapolis Colts offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton. Because the Colts don’t have a bye in the playoffs, Hamilton won’t be allowed to interview for another position until his season with Indianapolis comes to an end.

Shanahan wants to get back into coaching after being fired by the Redskins in 2013 and spending the 2014 season out of football. Shanahan won two Super Bowls with the Broncos with John Elway at quarterback, but he finished 24-40 in four seasons with the Redskins. Shanahan also was expected to interview with the San Francisco 49ers this weekend.

The Bills owners, Terry and Kim Pegula, planned to fly to San Diego to interview Chargers offensive coordinator Frank Reich on Sunday, according to the Associated Press. Reich spent his first 10 NFL seasons with the Bills, backing up Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly.

General manager Doug Whaley will conduct the interviews and team pesident Russ Brandon will take part as an adviser, according to the AP.

Broncos offensive coordinator Adam Gase was already scheduled to be interviewed in Denver on Saturday. Gase is available to be interviewed during the Broncos’ weekend off before they prepare to host an AFC Divisional playoff game on Jan. 11.

Buffalo is also considering defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz, who joined the Bills a year ago, as a candidate. The Bills’ defensive players are making a push for Schwartz, who was the Detroit Lions’ head coach for five seasons. The Bills led the league with 54 sacks and finished fourth in total defense this season.

The Pegulas, who also own the NHL’s Buffalo Sabres, bought the Bills for a league-record $1.4 billion in October from the estate of Hall of Fame owner Ralph Wilson, who died in March.
