Chicago Bears defensive end Ray McDonald has been arrested on domestic violence and child endangerment charges, Santa Clara, Calif., police said Monday.

The exact date and nature of the alleged incident was not immediately known, according to NBC Bay Area, which first broke the story and later confirmed by police..

Last month, McDonald had been cleared by the NFL after its domestic-violence investigation, but the league continued to look at his alleged sexual-assault incident.

McDonald, 30, has said he will sue his accuser from the second incident, claiming that footage from his home surveillance system shows that their sexual encounter was “clearly consensual.”

“I had two incidents (in which) I feel like I didn’t do anything wrong, but still it’s in the spotlight,” McDonald said last month. “It was in the national spotlight for quite some time. I’m just trying to move forward from it.”

Chicago Bears chairman George McCaskey has said he initially vetoed general manager Ryan Pace’s request to sign McDonald in March.

The Bears signed McDonald on March 24 to one-year, $1.5 million contract that included no guaranteed money.

McCaskey changed his mind after McDonald flew to Chicago and met with him, and after he spoke to McDonald’s parents via telephone, according to the Chicago Tribune.

“I told him that my assessment was ‘bad decision-making,’ allowing himself to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, or not withdrawing from a situation at the appropriate time,” McCaskey said. “And I told him, if he’s to remain a Bear, that needs to improve. And he pledged to me that it would.”

The San Francisco 49ers released McDonald on Dec. 17, with general manager Trent Baalke citing a “pattern of poor decision making.”

McDonald was arrested Aug. 31, 2014, on suspicion of felony domestic violence in San Jose, Calif., but no charges were filed because of insufficient evidence.

The 49ers released McDonald after allegations that police were investigating him on suspicion of sexual assault. San Jose police began that investigation on Dec. 16, 2014, after a hospital reported a possible victim. San Jose police have not charged him or cleared him.

Since 2011, McDonald started 56 games for the 49ers, including 14 last season. He had 39 tackles and three sacks in 2014. In his eight-year NFL career, all with the 49ers, McDonald has 210 career tackles, 19 1/2 sacks and one interception.
