Back from their bye, Jaguars have jump in their step

JACKSONVILLE — The Jacksonville Jaguars apparently got the message from coach Gus Bradley.

The Jaguars returned to the practice field Monday for the first time since they lost in London a week ago and Bradley liked the team’s attitude on what he called Bonus Monday because they had an extra practice.

“Sometimes that Bonus Monday, I think you’ve been around here a couple of times where we’ve had Bonus Mondays and the practice wasn’t what we were looking for,” Bradley said. “Not today. It was very good. It was very competitive and I think that’s the vision for me to challenge our guys even moreso on the things they can control. I think that we challenge them but they need to feel it even more and demand it even more. I know that’s my perspective and that’s what I can do to help the team so that’s what it is.”

Except for meetings last Tuesday, the Jaguars were off for the bye week. Bradley hoped they’d come back energized.

“We asked them to take a look at not only what they’re assigned to and what we ask them to do but other ways they can contribute and other ways they can improve themselves and improve the team,” Bradley said last Tuesday.

But whether that translates to any better play on the field remains to be seen. They have the second-worst record in the league at 1-9, a mark they’ve had for the third straight year.

They go to Indianapolis Sunday to face a Colts team that beat them twice last year by 37-3 and 30-10 margins and beat them in the third game this year, 44-17.

If they fall to 1-10, they will be worse than last year record-wise when they were 2-9 after 11 games. Last year, they were 0-8 at the bye and went 4-4 the rest of the way.

Meanwhile, there were developments around the league Sunday that could impact the Jaguars. Here’s a look at some of them:

–The Colts’ 42-20 loss to New England Sunday night dropped them to 6-4 and gives them extra motivation when they host the Jaguars next Sunday in Indianapolis. The Colts can’t afford to overlook the Jaguars. In the first meeting, the Colts took a 30-0 lead at halftime in the third game of the year when Bradley made the switch from Chad Henne to Blake Bortles. In his debut, Bortles passed for 221 yards and threw two touchdown passes, but also threw two picks in the 44-17 loss. But with a 30-0 lead, the Colts defense probably wasn’t at its best. Bortles has struggled recently and Bradley suggested one of the problems is that teams have had more time to study him.

“Maybe the way teams are challenging us and doing different things, tighter coverage and things like that,” Bradley said.

Now that Bortles has seen more defenses, maybe he’s ready after the bye to trump those defenses.

–Houston’s 23-7 victory over Cleveland and the solid showing by Ryan Mallett in his first start was not good news for the Jaguars. They play Houston twice in the last four games. They swept them last year when Case Keenum started both games. Repeating that with Mallett, who threw for two touchdowns and 221 yards against the Browns, won’t be easy.

–The Jaguars finally come back home in two weeks to host the New York Giants, who host Dallas this Sunday before coming to Jacksonville. The Giants lost to San Francisco, 16-10, Sunday as Eli Manning threw five picks. That’s going to start a lot of speculation about Tom Coughlin’s job security and Manning’s future with the team. It’s difficult to judge how this will affect the Giants when they play the Jaguars.

–Tennessee, which will play at Jacksonville on Thursday night Dec. 18, hosted Pittsburgh Monday night. Zach Mettenberger made his third start. Although the Jaguars lost to Tennessee Oct. 12 by a 16-14 margin when Charlie Whitehurst was the quarterback, this is likely the most winnable game left on the Jaguars’ schedule.

–Baltimore, which hosts the Jaguars on Dec. 14, had a bye this weekend. The Ravens are 6-4 and in the middle of the AFC North division race. This will be a difficult challenge for the Jaguars.

–Tampa Bay upset Washington, 27-7, leaving the 1-9 Jaguars the only team in the league with one win and putting them in the second slot in the draft behind winless Oakland, which is 0-10 after losing to San Diego, 13-6. The second spot would put the Jaguars in position to take the best pass rusher or trade down with a team that wants to move up to take a quarterback. The Jaguars, though, hope they post some victories down the stretch so they don’t stay in the second spot.

The Buccaneers made the definitive admission of their error on Saturday, cutting Aguayo. He exits with $428,000 in fully-guaranteed salary [more]
