After blowout loss to Patriots, Colts ready to move on

INDIANAPOLIS — Former college basketball coach Tates Locke used to have a favorite slogan after one of his teams had a bad performance: Forget It And Drive On.

After Sunday night’s nationally televised 42-20 demolition at the hands of the New England Patriots, Locke’s slogan is being adapted by the Indianapolis Colts.

While Indianapolis has AFC South rival Jacksonville coming this week, it may take some time for the Colts to put their performance against the Patriots in the rear-view mirror.

The Colts dropped to 6-4 leaving them just one game up on the Houston Texans in the division.

“You know what? The Patriots outplayed us, they out-executed. We’re moving on to Jacksonville,” defensive end Cory Redding said Monday. “We have to move on. As crazy as it is, we’ve still got a lot to play for. We’re 6-4, and we just didn’t have a good game. We’re moving on to Jacksonville and getting ready for that, and all that matters is finding a win this Sunday.”

Redding is usually one of the more outgoing players in the Indianapolis locker room. But the serious look on his face a day after the loss to New England spoke volumes.

Along with the team’s other veteran players, the word has gone out to the less experienced players: Take advantage of your opportunities when they are presented. Indianapolis didn’t do that against the Patriots.

“Those messages have been sent, and it’s up to us to execute and get the job done, no matter what,” Redding said. “This is a tough pill to swallow. We’ve all got to learn from it.

“We’ve watched the film and we’ve put it behind us. I’m pretty sure the message is still clear: We’ve got to go out there and play winning football. That’s what we’ve got to do.”

Quarterback Andrew Luck agreed that there’s a lot of work to do before the Colts take the field against the Jaguars.

“There is a lot to take from the (New England) game, from the film, a lot of fundamentals and technique to clean up and see where we went wrong obviously,” Luck said. “But again, now it’s on to Jacksonville. You take what you can from the film and move on, and realize we’ve got to get back on track.”

Luck admitted that the possibility of playing without the services of running back Ahmad Bradshaw (foot) and tight end Dwayne Allen (ankle) will be tough.

“It’s part of football and we know no one’s going to feel sorry for the Colts,” Luck said. “We certainly don’t feel sorry for ourselves. It’s next man up, and unfortunate or not, it’s a theme of football and we have to make it work.

“I don’t think it’s up to one person to fill a void. I think it’s a collective group effort. It’s coaches, it’s players, it’s everybody that’s involved. I think we’ll all do a great job of figuring out the best way to attack from now on, and everybody will chip in.”

NOTES: RB Ahmad Bradshaw left the game in the second half after suffering a fractured left fibula. He is expected to be sidelined for an extended period of time. Bradshaw is expected to see outside specialists to determine a further course of action. No decision has been made as to whether he will be placed on injured reserve. … TE Dwayne Allen suffered a sprained ankle in the first half. Allen was wearing a walking boot on his right foot on Monday and says the injury is a low-grade sprain. He remains optimistic of being able to play this week against Jacksonville.

REPORT CARD VS. PATRIOTS

–PASSING OFFENSE: B-minus — Yes, Colts QB Andrew Luck completed 23 of 39 passes for 303 yards and two touchdowns. Luck was also intercepted once off a tipped pass and was sacked once. TE Coby Fleener had his best game with Indianapolis after catching seven passes for 144 yards. WR Reggie Wayne added five catches for 91 yards. RB Ahmad Bradshaw dropped a big pass in the first half with plenty of room to run. And the Patriots did a nice job of bracketing WR T.Y. Hilton, limiting him to three catches for 24 yards.

–RUSHING OFFENSE: D-minus — 19 yards. That’s it. And 15 came on scrambles by Luck. RBs Trent Richardson and Ahmad Bradshaw had 14 carries for 4 yards.

–PASS DEFENSE: D — No pass rush equaled no sacks. New England QB Tom Brady had plenty of time to pick out his receivers, connecting on 19 of 30 passes for 257 yards and two touchdowns. Brady didn’t have huge numbers, but he was able to keep offensive drives alive time and again by finding open receivers downfield. TE Rob Gronkowski had four catches for 71 yards and a TD. WR Julian Edelman added five receptions for 50 yards. TE Tim Wright also had a TD catch.

–RUSH DEFENSE: F — RB Jonas Gray proved to be too much for the Indianapolis defense, which gave up yards in big chunks. Gray, who came into the game with 131 yards rushing for the season, proved to be a one-man wrecking crew for the Patriots. After being on the practice squads at Miami and Baltimore before coming to New England, Gray ran over, around and through the Colts for a career-best 199 yards on 38 carries. He scored four times, which were his first four touchdowns of the season. The Patriots had 244 yards rushing.

–SPECIAL TEAMS: B — K Adam Vinatieri had field goals from 31 and 53 yards. P Pat McAfee averaged 54.7 yards on three punts, including a long of 58 yards and two downed inside the Patriots’ 20-yard line. He also had five touchbacks on kickoffs. RB Daniel “Boom” Herron had two kickoff returns for a 26.5-yard average, including one return of 32 yards. The coverage units also did a good job.

–COACHING: D — Everybody wants to know how a team can have two weeks to prepare for a game and then come out and play the way Indianapolis did in a nationally televised game against the Patriots. The defense looked slow and confused. The offense shot itself in the foot several times while trying to sustain drives. Trading field goals for touchdowns just doesn’t cut it, especially against a team like New England. And another slow start at the beginning of the game. Just not a good performance across the board.
