The Buffalo Bills have reportedly offered their vacant head coaching job to former New York Jets’ head coach Rex Ryan.

In six seasons as Jets’ head coach, Ryan posted a 48-50 record, as he navigated New York to a pair of AFC title games appearances in his first two years.

The always quotable Ryan was the 12th man the Bills had interviewed for their vacant head coaching job after Doug Marrone opted out of his contract after just his second season.

What are the Bills getting with Rex Ryan?

Rex Ryan is one of the great defensive minds in football and he has a bravado that players seem to be drawn to.  Ryan is known for milking the most talent out of his 3-4 alignments but he takes over a Bills team that was very successful on the defensive side of the ball employing a 4-3.

Where Ryan has struggled in his career and what led to his ultimate demise in New York was his inability to develop a quarterback or passing game.  After finding immediate success, Mark Sanchez struggled with turnovers and confidence which led to his ouster.  Geno Smith has been a turnover machine throughout his first two seasons which led to Ryan benching him and then going back to him in 2014.

It’s somewhat of a surprise that a Bills team which was excellent on defense would have opted for another defensive head coach, especially considering his defensive philosophies contradict what was successful.

Although Rex Ryan’s defenses have given the AFC East kingpin New England Patriots the most trouble over the years, Buffalo still needs to find a quarterback and a great offensive coordinator that will work with Rex.  If they can’t do that the league’s longest playoff drought will continue.
