Bob McNair On Osweiler Benching: “That Was A Gutsy Call”

Enough was enough.

Despite leading the woeful AFC South, there have been ongoing rumblings about the play of Brock Osweiler. When the Houston Texans signed him to a four-year, $72 million deal, the thought process was that Osweiler would be the quarterback of the future.

While that belief could still ring true, the process was rudely interrupted yesterday afternoon when head coach Bill O’Brien elected to bench Osweiler in favor of Tom Savage. After being down double digits, Savage led Houston to an improbable comeback that has people wondering what’s next.

Texans owner Bob McNair spoke on the matter.

“I’m just glad I wasn’t the one that had to make that decision,” McNair said. “I mean, that was a gutsy call. Give coach credit, he made a change and it was for the good of the team. We benefited from it. Now we have three good quarterbacks and we are proud of all of them.”

Savage completed 23 of 36 passes for 260 yards.

“Tom played very well,” McNair said. “He got things going for us. That was a decision coach made and he’s going to do what he thinks is best for the team. He will be visiting with the quarterbacks and working with them deciding what we will be doing going forward. That’s his call.”

Following the game, O’Brien was non-committal on who would be the starting quarterback moving forward, but one must assume he’ll continue to ride the hot hand.
