Chargers RB Mathews out for Sunday’s game


The San Diego Chargers need to beat the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday to get into the playoffs, and it appears they will have to do it with several key players sidelined with injuries.

Chargers running back Ryan Mathews has been ruled out for the game with a sprained ankle. It will be the third straight game Mathews has missed since suffering the injury on Dec. 7. Mathews has rushed for 330 yards in eight games this season.

Branden Oliver rushed for 53 yards against San Francisco on Sunday.

Chargers wide receiver Keenan Allen has an outside chance to play Sunday, but he is listed as doubtful with a injuries to his shoulder and ankle. Allen missed Sunday’s overtime win over San Francisco because of the injuries.

Allen has 77 catches for 783 yards and four touchdowns in 14 games this season.

Punter Mike Scifres, who has surgery to repair a broken collarbone, also has been ruled out for the game.
