Vikings Pick Trae Waynes 11th Overall – Full Analysis

on

The Minnesota Vikings added another stud cornerback to their secondary as they will team up Xavier Rhodes with 11th overall pick Trae Waynes, from Michigan State.

“The Minnesota Vikings ranked 7th in pass defense in 2014, but Trae Waynes was just too good to pass up here. Waynes definitely has flaws, as he’s a little too handsy, which will be called frequently on Sunday’s. His awareness needs to improve as well, but Waynes has good length and he loves to compete. Most rookie cornerbacks will experience growing pains, the question is how do you deal with them mistakes and become better.”- Mark Gunnels

“Easily the best cornerback in this draft class, Trae Waynes is going to be plenty busy in the pass-happy NFC North. It’s a bit shocking that in a league that has shifted so heavily toward passing the football the first cornerback fell outside of the Top 10, but the loss of several teams is Minnesota’s gain. Waynes is fast and physical and can play out on an island against elite players at the receiver position. He’ll be tested by three great receiving tandems up north, but there’s reason to believe he’s up to the challenge.” – Devon Jeffreys

“Love this pick in a division filled with receiving and QB talent. Not so bold prediction: Trae Waynes will pick off Jay Cutler in his rookie season.” – Alex Hickey

“Calvin Johnson, Alshon Jeffery and Jordy Nelson made the Minnesota Vikings selection of Trae Waynes about as much as the Vikings front office did. Waynes is a long corner that loves to play physical press coverage, and will fit right into a young underrated Vikings defense that absolutely needed help at corner. Some believe Waynes stock has been helped by a mediocre corner crop, but Minnesota will love his size and physicality in a conference full of big, physical receivers.”- Pat Donovan

“When we did our recent two-round mock draft here at Football Insiders, I had Trae Waynes going to the Vikings at No. 11. So allow me to say, as humbly as possible: called it! Not that it was a shocking pick, given Minnesota’s struggles to slow down outside receivers last season. And in a division with Aaron Rodgers, Calvin Johnson, Alshon Jeffery and now Kevin White, adding another strong cornerback to pair with Xavier Rhodes made too much sense to ignore.”- Michael Lombardo

“The Minnesota Vikings are fighting offensive firepower with a great dose of water as they add the best cornerback in the draft in Trae Waynes, to one of the most underrated cornerbacks in football in Xavier Rhodes.  Sometimes the obvious picks are the best ones.”- Charlie Bernstein
