Bears sign veteran S Martin, RB Thomas

The Chicago Bears signed safety Sherrod Martin and running back Daniel Thomas to one-year contracts on Thursday.

The team also waived quarterback Pat Devlin, kicker Jeremiah Detmer and tight end Jacob Maxwell.

Martin and Thomas both had tryouts for the Bears at minicamp this week.

Martin, a second-round pick by the Carolina Panthers in 2009, has played in 72 games (38 starts) with Carolina (2009-13) and the Jacksonville Jaguars (2014). He has recorded 195 tackles, eight interceptions, 22 pass breakups, five forced fumbles and one fumble recovery.

Thomas, a second-round pick of the Miami Dolphins in 2011, has played in 52 games and rushed for 1,480 yards and 10 touchdowns on 409 carries (3.6 average). He also has caught 55 passes for 412 yards and three touchdowns.

Last season, Thomas rushed for 168 yards and two touchdowns and caught 13 passes for 121 yards.
